Meth Mouth Can Signal Addiction to Dentists
When otherwise healthy young people show up at the dentist with severe oral health problems, it should signal to the dentist that the patient may be addicted to methamphetamine. Patients who exhibit symptoms of "meth mouth" are more likely to be injection drug users, according to a new study.

More Bad News for Alcohol-Energy Drinkers
Combining alcohol with caffeine-containing energy drunks can be a dangerous mix, according to research at the University of Florida. A recent study found that bar-hopping college students who mixed alcohol with energy drinks were more likely to be very intoxicated and more likely to drive while drinking.
Unfortunately, researchers believe as many as 28% of college-age drinkers are mixing alcohol with energy drinks on a regular basis. Read more...

Tips for Parents: Underage Binge Drinking
A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that 45 percent of teenagers drink alcohol and of those who drink 64 percent admit to binge drinking. This report prompted the NYU Child Study Center to suggest tips for parents to use to curb teen binge drinking by maximizing the influence they have over their children's decision-making process.

Something Else for Parents to Worry About: K2
If underage drinking and rising prescription drug abuse wasn't enough to worry about, now parents now have another substance to be on the look out for - one that is completely legal, unregulated and available almost anywhere. It's an herbal product called "K2" better known by teens as "fake weed."

85% of Prison Inmates Need Substance Abuse Treatment
Of the estimated 2.3 million inmates currently incarcerated in U.S. prisons, 1.9 million could benefit from alcohol and drug treatment, which could ultimately save taxpayers millions of dollars, according to a new report. Currently only 11% of inmates who need treatment are receiving it during their incarceration.
Approximately 85% of current inmates could benefit from treatment, according to The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. Read more...
